Mais, précisément parce que légère, elle est plus sujette aussi à un écart qui peut, à la seconde d'une surprise, déterminer la collision fatale, fatale surtout pour le cycliste.

Il est à souhaiter, pourtant qu'un accord, une entente autrement efficace que des réglementations difficilement applicables sur des milliers de kilomètres de route, se fassent entre nous, et que nous nous imposions, chacun, une sorte de discipline où nous trouverons notre sécurité.

C'est bien assez de la poussière et de la fumée dont les automobilistes gratifient nécessairement les cyclistes qui s'en passeraient volontiers, sans que, par une négligence coupable et qui peut devenir criminelle, ils leur fassent encore courir des risques d'accidents graves.

Mais, répondent certains, la vitesse nous y oblige.
Et qui donc vous oblige, vous, à de la vitesse, à de ces vitesses où vous ne sauriez plus éviter l'accident possible?
Rien, ni personne.
Non, de la sagesse, et encore de la sagesse. La solidarité qui doit unir ces pratiquants des nouveaux modes de locomotion nous fait un devoir de nous entraider au lieu de nous gêner les uns les autres, sur ces routes qui nous appartiennent à tous et dont nous devons jouir en commun.
Que le cycliste, à l'appel de l'automobiliste, ne s'amuse pas à vagabonder sur la route, qu'il garde et serre sa droite, strictement, résolument, et que l'automobiliste ne s'amuse pas, à son tour, pour "épater" sa compagnie, ou "esbrouffer" le cycliste, comme je l'ai vu faire à certains, à frôler la bicyclette de si près que le moindre écart de direction provoqué par une appréhension bien légitime la jetterait sous les roues de la voiture.
Bien indiquer son intention de tourner!
Un siècle plus tard, ce texte mériterait d'être publié dans toutes les écoles d'apprentissage à la conduite...

Fond of ferreting about in old books, and reviews, I have just fallen on a small pearl, in the review of the Touring Club de France of September, 1908, written by a mister Abel Ballif, a text unfortunately always of current events:
"We send a pressing appeal to the car drivers (they make, by thousands, part of Touring Club), in favour of those of us who, faithful to the bicycle, are side by side with them on the road, for one second.
That they made in kind to leave always to the cyclist a sufficient space. Our machine, to us, is thin and light. It occupies on the ground only a width of some fingers. But, exactly because light, it is more subject also to a distance which can, in the second of a surprise, determine the fatal, fatal collision especially for the cyclist.

Some courage is needed today to circulate with a bicycle on roads usually frequented by the car drivers. So, number of us, who formerly cycled with heat, they look twice before deciding to leave, and often, they decides to stay.
It is to be wished, nevertheless that an agreement, an otherwise effective agreement that with difficulty applicable regulations on thousands of kilometers of road, has to be made between us, and that we stand out, each, a kind of discipline where we shall find our safety.

alternately, know these two moods: that of the reckless driver bothered by the cyclist, and that of the cyclist terrorized by the
reckless driver.

No, of the wisdom, and still the wisdom. The solidarity which has to unite these followers of the new modes of locomotion carries out the duty to us to help us instead of being ashamed some the others, on these roads which belong to us in all and which we have to enjoy in common.

that he keeps and tightens his right, strictly,
determinedly, and that the car driver has not fun, in his turn, "to amaze"
his company, or " esbrouffer " the cyclist, as I saw it making for
some, to touch the bicycle of if near that the slightest distance from
direction caused by a very justifiable apprehension would
throw it under the wheels of the car.But, answer some car drivers, the speed obliges us there.

their manners to be on the road, the ones to the others, they fix this immense
moral progress to be themselves the own agents of a necessary order, the guards
