L'égalité hommes-femmes est un combat dont on entend parler depuis longtemps, et qui est loin d'être achevé, mais en se penchant sur l'histoire de ce combat, on peut remarquer quelques perles... Passons sur la France, grand pays des Droits de l'Homme (mais pas de la femme?), qui n'a accordé le droit de vote aux femmes qu'en 1946... On croit rêver... Intéressons-nous à notre sujet favori; la bicyclette! Elle participa à l'émancipation féminine dès la fin du 19ème siècle, dès sa naissance...
Par exemple, aux Etats-Unis, en 1896, environ 25 à 30 pour cent des bicyclettes achetées sont utilisées par des femmes, et la célèbre féministe Suzan Anthony pouvait à juste titre déclarer au New York World le 2 février 1896: "Laissez-moi vous dire ce que je pense de la bicyclette. Je pense qu'elle a fait plus pour émanciper la femme que tout autre chose dans le monde. Elle donne aux femmes un sentiment de liberté et d'autonomie. Je soutiens et je me réjouis chaque fois que je vois une femme en promenade sur une bicyclette..., l'image de la liberté, de la féminité sans entraves."
